US Officials Say China Sought to Provide Iran with X-Band Radar System

Senior United States officials have revealed that China explored the possibility of supplying Iran with an advanced X-band radar system in the days immediately following the outbreak of war in the region, according to a report by CBS News citing multiple American officials familiar with the intelligence.

The disclosure raises fresh concerns about the deepening military and technological ties between Beijing and Tehran at a moment of acute regional instability. An X-band radar system, which operates at high frequency to detect and track objects with exceptional precision, would represent a significant upgrade to Iran's air defense and missile guidance capabilities — enabling the country to better monitor and potentially counter aerial threats, including strikes by Israel and surveillance by Western allies.

The reported approach by China came at a particularly sensitive moment. Iran's military posture has been under intense scrutiny since the regional conflict escalated, with Western governments tracking the flow of arms and technology into Tehran with growing alarm. American officials have previously warned that China's defense cooperation with Iran, while often conducted through civilian commercial frameworks, carries direct implications for regional security.

For Gulf states, the prospect of a more capable Iranian radar network carries immediate strategic weight. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and their neighbors rely heavily on early warning systems and air defense coordination to monitor Iranian missile and drone activity — threats that have manifested repeatedly in attacks on Gulf infrastructure and shipping lanes in recent years. A Chinese-supplied X-band system would narrow the information advantage currently held by Gulf and Western military planners.

Qatar, which hosts the largest US military base in the Middle East at Al Udeid Air Base, sits at the center of regional air defense architecture. Any enhancement of Iranian radar capability would directly affect the operational calculations of coalition forces operating from Qatari soil. Doha has consistently advocated for de-escalation and dialogue as the preferred path to regional stability, positions that carry renewed urgency in light of these latest intelligence disclosures.

China has repeatedly denied supplying Iran with weapons or militarily sensitive technology and has portrayed its relationship with Tehran as grounded in legitimate economic and energy cooperation under the terms of a long-term strategic partnership agreement signed in 2021. Washington has contested that characterization, and the latest report is likely to intensify pressure on Beijing ahead of ongoing diplomatic engagements over the Iranian nuclear file.

The White House and Pentagon had not issued formal statements on the report at the time of publication. CBS News said the officials spoke on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the intelligence involved.
