Iranian Parliament Chief Says They Are Prepared to Take Necessary Measures

Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared Sunday that Tehran remains prepared to take all necessary measures at any moment, warning that despite openness to diplomacy, the Islamic Republic places no trust in what he called "the enemy" following a war imposed through American interference.

Ghalibaf, speaking in remarks carried by Al Jazeera's live news channel, invoked what he described as a twelve-day war forced upon Iran by United States meddling as evidence that Tehran could not afford complacency. He framed the statement as both a signal of military readiness and a rebuke of any expectation that Iran would enter negotiations from a position of weakness.

"We do not trust the enemy," Ghalibaf said, adding that while Iran was open to talks, preparedness was non-negotiable and could be activated at any moment if circumstances demanded.

The remarks come amid an intensely delicate period in Iran's diplomatic posture. Indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington over Iran's nuclear programme have resumed in recent weeks, with Oman and Qatar both playing active facilitation roles. Gulf states, including Qatar, have invested considerable diplomatic capital in de-escalation efforts, concerned that any military confrontation between Iran and the United States — or between Iran and Israel — would destabilise the broader region and disrupt energy markets.

Qatar, which maintains a long-standing policy of open channels with Tehran while hosting the largest American military base in the Middle East at Al Udeid, finds itself in a strategically sensitive position. Doha has consistently advocated for dialogue as the only viable path to resolving the nuclear standoff, and Qatari officials have in recent months quietly facilitated the passage of messages between parties.

Ghalibaf's hardline framing is likely to complicate the diplomatic atmosphere ahead of any further rounds of talks. His reference to past military confrontation signals that the Iranian legislature, which holds significant influence over public sentiment and budget allocations, is not willing to be seen as yielding ground under pressure.

Regional analysts note that such statements from the parliamentary leadership often serve a domestic function — reassuring conservative constituencies that the government is not making concessions behind closed doors — while not necessarily reflecting the operational posture of the Iranian military or the negotiating position of the foreign ministry.

Nevertheless, the statement is expected to be closely watched by Gulf capitals, where any escalation in Iran-US tensions is treated as an immediate threat to regional stability, shipping lanes, and the energy infrastructure that underpins the global economy.
