Israel accused of sexual violence, assaults on Gaza aid activists. Reports of degrading treatment in custody.

Israeli forces are facing fresh accusations of sexual violence, physical assault and degrading treatment against international activists detained while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip, according to testimony emerging from those recently released from custody. The reports, circulated by Anadolu Agency and corroborated by multiple human rights observers, describe a pattern of abuse that activists say amounts to systematic intimidation designed to deter future solidarity missions to the enclave.

Activists who participated in recent flotilla and overland aid convoys have described being stripped, beaten, threatened with sexual assault, and subjected to prolonged humiliation during interrogation by Israeli personnel. Several detainees reported being held in stress positions for extended periods, denied access to lawyers and consular officials, and forced to sign documents in Hebrew they could not read. Women among the detainees described particularly invasive searches and verbal sexual harassment, while male activists reported beatings and threats against their families.

The testimonies add to a growing body of evidence documenting the treatment of foreign nationals who have attempted to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza, now in its third year of intensified siege following the October 2023 escalation. International law experts note that such treatment, if verified, would constitute clear violations of the Geneva Conventions, the Convention Against Torture, and customary international humanitarian law, regardless of the detainees' nationality or the circumstances of their detention.

Qatar, which has positioned itself as a leading mediator in the Gaza conflict and a primary humanitarian donor to the Palestinian people, has repeatedly condemned Israeli treatment of aid workers and called for unimpeded humanitarian access to the enclave. Doha has channeled hundreds of millions of dollars in emergency relief to Gaza through United Nations agencies and the Qatar Fund for Development, and has consistently raised the issue of activist detentions in international forums, including the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Gulf Cooperation Council states have echoed Qatar's concerns, with several issuing statements demanding accountability for abuses against humanitarian workers. Turkish authorities, whose nationals have been among those detained in recent flotilla operations, have summoned Israeli diplomats to protest the treatment of their citizens.

Human rights organizations including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have called for independent international investigations into the allegations, warning that the absence of accountability risks further escalation. Israeli authorities have not responded substantively to the latest accusations, maintaining their standard position that detentions are conducted in accordance with domestic and international law. The released activists have pledged to pursue legal action through international mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court.
