Qatar National Service: What Just Changed, and How to Apply

On 9 June 2026, Qatar's Ministry of Defence widened eligibility for the National Service Programme to two groups previously kept out: children of Qatari mothers, and non-Qatari residents born in Qatar. Until now, enlistment was largely limited to those with Qatari fathers. Here is what is confirmed so far, and what remains unclear.

WHO IS NOW ELIGIBLE. Applicants must have been born in Qatar and be at least 18 years old, hold a valid Qatari residency permit, and be of good conduct. Anyone previously dismissed from service, or convicted of an offence involving dishonesty or breach of trust, is excluded unless formally rehabilitated. Candidates must pass the Ministry of Defence admission interview and be certified medically fit by the Military Medical Committee.

THE BENEFITS. Service runs for up to five years, with a monthly allowance rising to as much as 7,000 Qatari riyals — about 1,920 US dollars — by the final year. Graduates receive priority consideration for permanent recruitment into the Qatar Armed Forces, and priority consideration for permanent residency, a status long sought by established residents across the Gulf.

HOW TO APPLY. Applications are submitted electronically through the Ministry of Defence website. Required documents include the applicant's Qatar ID card, a valid passport, an official birth certificate proving birth in Qatar, and — for children of Qatari mothers — the mother's passport and birth certificate.

WHAT IS STILL UNCLEAR. The official notice sets the minimum age at 18; some applicants on social media report an 18 to 25 range and point to the Metrash app as an alternative route, but neither is officially confirmed. Several would-be applicants also reported the online form returning errors in the first days after the announcement — consistent with an early rollout. The precise terms of the permanent-residency pathway have not yet been detailed.

This guide will be updated as the Ministry of Defence releases further information.
