Qatar Welcomes UN Security Council Condemnation of Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia

Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday welcomed a statement issued by the United Nations Security Council condemning attacks carried out by Yemen's Houthi group against Saudi Arabia, reaffirming Doha's commitment to the security and stability of the Gulf region. In a statement carried by the Qatar News Agency, the ministry stressed that such attacks constitute a violation of international law and pose a direct threat to regional and international peace and security, calling for an end to all military operations that target civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The Security Council statement, issued this week, condemned the Houthi movement's cross-border strikes on Saudi territory, which have periodically targeted Saudi cities, oil facilities and airports with ballistic missiles and armed drones since the group seized control of Yemen's capital Sanaa in 2014 and the conflict escalated after a Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government. The council's members reiterated their support for a comprehensive, Yemeni-led political settlement to end the wider conflict.

Qatar, which restored full diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia after the 2021 Al-Ula summit ended a three-and-a-half-year Gulf rift, has consistently positioned itself as a mediator in regional crises, including in Gaza and between Washington and Tehran. Doha's foreign ministry reiterated its rejection of any actions that undermine the sovereignty of Gulf Cooperation Council states or threaten the safety of civilians, and called on the international community to uphold collective efforts to preserve security across the Arabian Peninsula and the wider Middle East.
