UAE: Iran Targeted ADNOC Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz

The United Arab Emirates said Iran targeted a tanker operated by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in the Strait of Hormuz, with no injuries reported among those on board, according to Emirati officials cited by Al Jazeera. Authorities did not immediately disclose the tanker's cargo, exact location within the strait, or the method used in the alleged targeting.

The Strait of Hormuz is the world's most critical oil chokepoint, a narrow waterway separating Iran from the UAE and Oman through which roughly a fifth of global oil consumption transits daily. It is the sole maritime export route for Gulf producers including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Iraq and Qatar. ADNOC, the UAE's state-owned energy company, is one of the world's largest oil producers and central to the Emirates' export economy.

The incident adds to a pattern of maritime confrontations in and around the strait, where Iran's Revolutionary Guard navy has periodically seized, boarded or harassed commercial vessels amid broader disputes with Gulf states and Western powers over sanctions, nuclear negotiations and regional security. Previous waves of tanker attacks in 2019 were blamed on Iran by the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the United States, though Tehran denied responsibility.

Any disruption to shipping through Hormuz carries direct consequences for Qatar, which exports the bulk of its liquefied natural gas through the same waterway, making the security of the strait a shared strategic concern across the Gulf Cooperation Council.
