Sudan's Alburhan Calls for Homegrown Peace Solution Amid War Crisis

Sudan's army chief and Transitional Sovereignty Council President Abdalfattah Alburhan has said that any lasting peace settlement to end the country's war must be homegrown and driven by Sudanese, not imposed from abroad, according to a Foreign Policy report published on September 21, 2026.
The war began on April 15, 2023, when fighting broke out in Khartoum between the Sudanese army under Alburhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. The two men had been allies in the October 2021 military takeover that ended Sudan's civilian-military power-sharing arrangement. The fighting has since spread across Khartoum, Darfur, Kordofan and other regions.
United Nations agencies estimate that the conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 12 million, and they describe it as one of the world's largest humanitarian crises. Famine has been confirmed in parts of Darfur and Kordofan. In late October 2025 the RSF captured El Fasher, the army's last major stronghold in Darfur.
External mediation has so far produced no lasting ceasefire. In September 2025 the so-called Quad, made up of the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, proposed a three-month humanitarian truce followed by a permanent ceasefire and a nine-month transition. Army-aligned authorities objected to the UAE's role and accused Abu Dhabi of arming the RSF, an allegation the UAE denies.
Qatar has a direct record on Sudanese peacemaking. Doha hosted the negotiations that produced the 2011 Doha Document for Peace in Darfur, and Qatar has since called for a ceasefire, dialogue among Sudanese parties and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
