Trump Calls Iran Nuclear Threat a "Cancer," Downplays Oil Price Surge

United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday described the ongoing military operation against Iran as an "excursion into hell" for Tehran, while dismissing concerns over a sharp spike in global oil prices triggered by the escalating confrontation between Washington and the Islamic Republic.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump characterized Iran's nuclear program as a "cancer" that had to be addressed decisively, signaling no willingness to de-escalate the standoff that has rattled global energy markets and drawn urgent diplomatic responses from capitals across the Middle East and beyond.
"This is an excursion into hell for them, not for us," Trump said, adding that the operation was proceeding according to plan and that Iran's leadership would soon face consequences for what he called decades of nuclear deception.
The remarks came as Brent crude surged past the $90-per-barrel mark in intraday trading, its highest level in months, with traders pricing in the risk of prolonged disruption to oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which roughly a fifth of the world's petroleum supply passes daily. Trump sought to calm market jitters, insisting that energy supplies remained stable and that prices would normalize once Iran's threat was neutralized.
The escalation has placed the Gulf region at the center of intense diplomatic activity. Qatar, which shares the world's largest natural gas field with Iran and has historically maintained open channels of communication with Tehran, faces a particularly delicate balancing act. Doha has repeatedly called for dialogue and restraint, warning that military confrontation in the Gulf risks catastrophic humanitarian and economic consequences for the entire region.
Qatari officials have not publicly commented on Trump's latest remarks, but diplomatic sources indicated that Doha was engaged in behind-the-scenes consultations with multiple parties aimed at preventing a wider regional conflagration. Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has long positioned the country as a neutral mediator in regional disputes, a role that has gained renewed significance amid the current crisis.
Analysts noted that Trump's combative rhetoric appeared designed to project strength domestically while putting maximum pressure on Tehran, but warned that the dismissal of oil market concerns could backfire if the confrontation drags on. Gulf energy producers, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, are closely monitoring the situation, with contingency plans to ramp up output should supply disruptions materialize.
The United Nations Security Council was expected to convene an emergency session to discuss the deteriorating situation, with several member states calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomatic engagement.
