Europe's gas storage crisis deepens as Iran disrupts Qatar LNG supplies

European natural gas storage has fallen to 58% of capacity, well below the 75-80% threshold analysts consider necessary to safely weather the winter heating season, as Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to block Qatari LNG shipments to key European buyers. Italy, Poland, and Belgium have received no liquefied natural gas from Qatar since April, cutting off a supply route that has become increasingly important to European energy security since the continent moved to reduce its dependence on Russian pipeline gas. The Strait of Hormuz, through which the bulk of Qatar's LNG exports must pass en route to European and Asian markets, has been closed by Iran, leaving cargoes stranded and forcing buyers to compete for alternative supplies from the United States, Norway, and other producers. Benchmark European gas prices have climbed past 55 euros per megawatt-hour, reflecting mounting concern in energy markets over the shortfall. Analysts warn that if storage levels do not recover before the coldest months set in, European governments may be forced to implement conservation measures, echoing the emergency steps taken during the initial shock of the Ukraine war. Qatar remains one of the world's largest LNG exporters and has positioned itself as a reliable long-term partner for European buyers through multi-decade supply agreements signed with Germany, France, Italy, and other states in recent years. The current disruption underscores the vulnerability created by the Strait of Hormuz chokepoint, through which a significant share of global LNG trade transits, and comes at a moment when Doha has been working to expand liquefaction capacity through its North Field expansion project to meet growing global demand.
