Al-Shabab ambush kills five Kenyan security officers near Somalia border

Five members of Kenya's Special Operations Group, an elite police counter-terrorism unit, were killed on Tuesday when Al-Shabab fighters ambushed their patrol in Mandera county, near the Somali border in Kenya's far northeast. The attack took place near Wantey Dam, roughly six kilometres from Lafey police station, when gunmen opened fire on the patrol shortly after midday. An armoured vehicle sent as reinforcement was then struck by a roadside bomb that destroyed the vehicle, though no further casualties were reported from the blast. Al-Shabab claimed responsibility through an affiliated media outlet, attributing the operation to its armed wing. The ambush is among the deadliest in a string of recent attacks along the same stretch of the border. On 13 July, Kenyan forces said they killed eleven Al-Shabab fighters in the area, and on 24 July gunmen attacked the villages of Fino and Arabia within the space of an hour. The al-Qaeda-linked group has fought the Somali government for nearly two decades and still controls swathes of south-central Somalia, using the porous frontier to stage cross-border raids. Kenya has been a target since it sent troops into Somalia in 2011, and its forces remain part of the African Union mission supporting Mogadishu. The violence carries weight beyond East Africa: Gulf states, with Qatar prominent among them, have invested heavily in Somali state-building, reconstruction and mediation, and Doha has consistently backed the federal government in Mogadishu on the grounds that only a functioning Somali state can deny Al-Shabab the vacuum in which it operates. Tuesday's ambush is a reminder of how far that goal remains, and of the price border communities and security forces continue to pay along one of the region's most dangerous frontiers.
