Explosion and Fire at Barzan Gas Facility in Ras Laffan; QatarEnergy Says Blaze Under Control

QatarEnergy has confirmed that an operational incident during the start-up of operations at Ras Laffan Industrial City resulted in an explosion and fire at the Barzan local gas supply facility on the evening of Sunday, 21 June 2026. In an official statement, the company said emergency response teams were deployed immediately to contain the blaze, which is now under control, adding that it would continue to share the latest available information.

Qatar's Ministry of Interior described the incident as an internal technical fault at a factory in the Ras Laffan Industrial Area, confirming that Civil Defence teams had responded and that no injuries or leaks had been reported.

The Barzan facility is a vital plant supplying natural gas to Qatar's domestic market, feeding power generation and water desalination. It sits within the Ras Laffan Industrial City complex north of Doha, one of the world's largest gas-processing hubs. No impact on gas supplies or export operations has been reported so far, as authorities moved to reassure residents and markets that the situation is fully contained while investigations continue into the precise cause.
