Iran Warns of Radioactive Contamination from US-Israeli Attacks

Iran has issued a stark warning that any military strike on its nuclear facilities by the United States or Israel would trigger radioactive contamination across the wider Middle East region, raising alarm among Gulf states already monitoring the fragile state of regional security.
Iranian officials delivered the warning as diplomatic tensions over Tehran's nuclear programme reached a new peak, with the United States and Israel both signalling in recent weeks that military options remain on the table should negotiations over Iran's uranium enrichment activities fail to produce results. Iran's warning underscores the catastrophic risks that any such strike would carry far beyond its intended targets.
Tehran stressed that its nuclear sites, including facilities at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, are located in densely populated areas and near water sources, meaning any attack releasing radioactive material could contaminate soil, water supplies, and air across neighbouring countries. The fallout, Iranian officials argued, would not respect national borders and would constitute an environmental catastrophe affecting millions across Iran, Iraq, the Gulf states, and potentially further afield.
For Qatar and the broader Gulf Cooperation Council, the warning carries immediate strategic weight. The Gulf states share prevailing wind patterns and waterways with Iran, and any significant radioactive release from facilities in central or southern Iran could threaten the Persian Gulf's delicate marine ecosystem, upon which desalination infrastructure across the region critically depends. Qatar, whose water security relies heavily on desalination, would be among the most exposed nations.
Qatar has consistently advocated for diplomatic resolution of the Iran nuclear standoff, maintaining open channels with Tehran while hosting US military assets at Al Udeid Air Base. Doha's position — urging dialogue over confrontation — reflects both the kingdom's diplomatic traditions and the very real vulnerabilities a regional conflict would impose on its population and infrastructure.
The warning comes as indirect talks between Iran and the United States over a renewed nuclear agreement remain stalled, with Washington demanding full transparency over enrichment levels that Western intelligence assessments suggest have reached near-weapons-grade concentrations. Iran denies pursuing a nuclear weapon, insisting its programme is entirely civilian in nature.
Regional and international observers have called for immediate de-escalation, warning that any military miscalculation could set off a chain of consequences that no party to the conflict could fully control. Iran's latest statement is widely read as both a deterrent message and an appeal to regional neighbours to resist pressure from Washington and Tel Aviv to support or facilitate any strike on Iranian soil.
